As things heated up nationally, I was denied jobs and hid the fact that I was French. I told people I was Italian. Or British. I’ve learned since that this is something of an example for an immigrant’s journey, being considered an outsider. (Fun fact: fries are actually Belgian…)
History You Probably Know - "Freedom fries" was a 2003 American term for French fries, introduced in the House of Representatives cafeteria, to protest France's refusal to support the Iraq War invasion.
